2023 was a record year for research, innovation, and transfer with the UPV seal. Its R&D&I activity resulted in 116.2 million in revenue, the highest figure in its history; it registered 40 new patent applications; it approved five new spin-offs, four of them investees - Sensing Tools, PhysioMRI, Artikode, Opticalsens, CiberTRS; and it registered 26 new software. It was also a record year for the international projection of its R&D&I, with 24 new European projects, 3 of which were coordinated, and more than €5M.

These are some of the leading figures of the "UPV Innovation" report, which summarizes a year of R&D&I of the UPV and has been presented today as part of the V UPV-Innovation Day. Held at the UPV Science Park, it brought together nearly three hundred people, including research staff, entrepreneurs, and other agents of the innovative ecosystem of the Universitat Politècnica de València.

"In 2023, the UPV was another key year for the scientific, technological, and business development of the Valencian Community. Our university continued to increase its relations with the productive sector, and we strengthened our commitment to transfer, training, internationalization, and scientific communication and dissemination. Undoubtedly, 2023 was, once again, a record year for our R&D&I", highlighted Salvador Coll, vice-rector for Innovation and Transfer at the Universitat Politècnica de València.

Innovating at the frontier

In addition, the meeting has counted with the participation as guest speaker of Alfons Cornella, founder, and president of Infonomía, who has offered a conference which, under the title "Innovating at the frontier," has delved into all the opportunities that derive from exploring the limits of business thanks to innovation.

"There are many problems to solve, of people, of organizations, of society, and we must find new or better solutions. I believe that a future is coming in which solutions will appear to situations that until now we considered unsolvable, for example, in health (diseases that will be treatable), in energy (sustainable solutions to our insatiable need for energy), in food (more efficient and sustainable processes). We have the mistaken impression that innovation is about new products or new technologies when the innovations that end up being most successful are those that bring new value to people, solving problems, providing new possibilities (for example, communicating remotely with cell phones when this was unthinkable before, or applying AI to change the way we produce images). There is a lot of possible innovation consisting of providing value by solving problems or responding to people's expectations in better or new ways," said Alfons Cornella.

The founder and president of Infonomía advocated "decisive support for innovative companies that add value, and, in particular, for companies that successfully export their products and services precisely because they are innovative. It isn't easy to convince a company that does not innovate to do so, but we can be useful by supporting companies that already have an innovative attitude. When the companies we support are successful, others will ask themselves, "Why are they successful, and I am not..." maybe they will understand that the secret is innovation... Humans are like that..." he concluded.

And what do companies think about when they talk about innovation? This was the question addressed in a round table discussion with the participation of Beatriz Salvador, head of Open Innovation at ACCIONA Energía; Nora Romero, Innovation Coordinator, KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub; Lorena González Teruel, Director of R&D Management at COSENTINO RESEARCH; and Daniel Ramón, ADM-Biopolis. They are all moderated by Fernando Conesa, head of the i2T Service of the UPV.

The day was closed by Pablo Lozano, Director of Talent Acquisition in Spain and Head of Talent Management in Eastern Spain at NTT DATA.

Tribute to women innovators, success stories, and Spontaneous Generation

In addition, during the event, a tribute was paid to women who are dedicated, directly or indirectly, to innovation and who are part of the UPV-innovation Knowledge Transfer Office, with the screening of the video "Innovative Women, Women Who Build Futures." It has also been possible to see firsthand some of the success stories of innovation and transfer of the UPV, as well as a selection of prototypes of the groups of students of Spontaneous Generation UPV.

One of the groups of this UPV program, the Comic Club, has turned the whole event into spectacular cartoons, capturing on paper the different milestones of this V UPV-Innovation Day.

This day is part of one of the objectives of the SIRVE Plan of the UPV (UPV Relevant, Objective 6), which aims to enhance the positive impact of academic knowledge in the socio-economic fabric and the environment.

Following March 21, a session for UPV students

The day held today will be extended to March 21, with the celebration of an event for students. UPV-innovation, together with PIAE+ and the Center for Lifelong Learning, has organized a training session for a delegation of UPV students to provide tools and skills to innovate from their different schools.
