Introduction

The Master's Degree in Oenology at the Universitat Politècnica de València is aimed at training professionals in wine production and winemaking, technicians and managers of companies in the sector and future researchers and specialists in winemaking technology and innovation.

The master's degree has two orientations. Firstly, a professional orientation, which gives continuity to undergraduate studies related to the food sector, to train specialist technicians in the productive activities characteristic of wine production. And, secondly, an academic orientation, which allows access to doctoral studies, to train in the skills of research activity in the field of viticulture, oenology and wine economics.

Objectives

In accordance with the two orientations of the master's degree, its objectives are as follows:

1. To train professionals for the wine sector, responding to the social demand for highly qualified technicians who are capable of directing and managing companies and organisations in the wine sector, which is of great importance in the national and international economy of many countries.

2. To train researchers and academics in the sciences of viticulture, oenology and wine economics, which in recent decades have undergone major advances, making knowledge a strategic resource for the development and sustainability of the sector.

Structure

The Master's degree is structured in three main thematic blocks: viticulture, oenology and wine economy. In viticulture, the sustainable techniques applied to vine cultivation are analysed; in oenology, the best traditional and innovative technological practices in winemaking and ageing in the wine industry are used; and in economics, the key factors of the wine business are determined. The teaching methodology combines theoretical and practical dimensions, with 50% of the total credits going to internships.

Moreover, the skills acquired in the subjects that make up the academic programme are completed with working experience in wine companies and completing the Master's thesis (TFM). This project may be professional, dealing with real problems in a company in the sector, or of a research nature, associated with research projects in the research centres, departments and institutes involved in the Master's degree.

The Master's Degree in Oenology is taught at the School of Agricultural Engineering and Environment. This Master's degree lasts approximately one year. It has 60 ECTS; 54 ECTS correspond to compulsory subjects, 6 ECTS to the Master's thesis.

The External Internships will be extracurricular (paid) and correspond to the student's stay for a determined period in a commercial winery to have a practical and real vision of the knowledge acquired in the theoretical classes.

It is structured based on the following modules:

- Viticulture (11 ECTS)

- Oenology (35,5 ECTS)

- Economics of the wine sector and wine business (7,5 ECTS)

- Extracurricular internships

- Final Master's thesis (6 ECTS)
